Stolen Paintings

Hello Art Lovers. I have an experience to share with you, an experience that might, hopefully, prevent other artists from going through the same ordeal I’ve gone through.

Although the vast majority of art dealers I’ve dealt with in the past have been professional and honest, sometimes an incident comes along that can propel an artist into total emotional frustration. That incident for me occurred one year ago, in the summer of 2007, when I was invited to have a solo art show at D Gallery in Oceanside California. Being a blind artist, the opportunity for people in San Diego County to see my art was invigorating. One of my goals has always been to show that blind people can create visual art. Although I have less than 5% vision left in one eye and only light perception remaining in my other, I can utilize that tiny bit of sight with the use of my memory. Relying on my memory is vital for I cannot see my paintings in their entirety either during or after their completion.

D Gallery was run by an art dealer named Gia Guidinger (I’ve since found out this is possibly an alias), the art show would run from August 1st 2007 – September 1st 2007, and we worked out a contract that contained all of the details one is supposed to have in a good contract. I made arrangements to fly from my home in Missouri to attend the show on opening night.

Opening night came and everyone in attendance had a great time. I responded to many questions regarding my art and the way I create it, and several people came up to me stating that they had just purchased certain works. I left for home feeling confident more sales would occur over the next four weeks.

Two weeks after returning home I was contacted by a friend in California, who told me that D Gallery was closed and all of my paintings were missing. I immediately phoned Ms. Guidinger and demanded that my art be returned to me or I would be contacting the local police. She assured me that my art was fine and claimed that the show lost money and she had to close down the gallery. When I inquired (several times over the next few weeks) as to how many of my paintings had sold, I received various answers along with excuses about misplacing her paper work. Little by little she shipped my paintings back to me, and when Ms. Guidinger said I’d received them all, I was15 paintings short. It was already past the date in the contract I was to be paid by, but she promised to send my percentage soon.

Several months passed and no payment came. Emails from her were vague, sometimes offering excuses and promises, other times they were abusive, and occasionally they were bizarre. I’d had enough of this fiasco and decided to take her to court.

She had breached the contract, and California civil service code 1738.6 states that an art dealer is required to pay the artist their share of the profits prior to the dealer paying himself/herself or spending any of the proceeds. I filed papers with San Diego County court, but found it impossible to have these documents served to Guidinger, for she had disappeared.

In January 2008 I placed a theft notice on my website with photos of the 15 paintings and a photo of Ms.Guidinger and myself. A couple of months later I received an email from her threatening to take legal action against me unless I removed her photo from my website. I wanted to shout, “please do it, take me to court, I’d love to see you in court!” Instead, she offered to pay me what she owed if I agreed to remove the theft notice. I was thoroughly familiar with her tactics by now and never for a moment believed she would actually pay me, but I wanted to say that I gave her every chance. So, I removed it, she didn’t pay, and the theft notice is now back on my website. I’ve also discovered that I’m not the first artist to have this experience with her, but as far as I know, I’m the only one speaking out about it.

It’s now been one year since the art show, I still haven’t been paid one penny, and the whereabouts of most of my 15 paintings is still a mystery. However, several weeks ago I received an interesting special delivery letter. It was from a Judge Mathis, and upon opening the letter I found out he’s a judge on TV. They search through court records around the country, came across my case in the files at San Diego Courthouse, and asked if I would agree to have my case on TV. I agreed, but they either couldn’t find Ms. Guidinger or couldn’t get her to agree to appear on Judge Mathis. A few days ago I received another special delivery letter. Now Cristina’s Court wants my case on their show. I await the results of their efforts to find her/convince her… I’m not holding my breath.

So much is happening at Art Lovers gallery: plans to make it a cooperative; plans to expand our internet and print sales . . . it's time for a new newsletter.

It's also a time for a fitting tribute to Victor DeGraff, the gallery's best-selling artist, who died last month, after his car went off the road just past Dead Man's curve in Cobden. Victor would appreciate the irony. His Sands of Time Studio website has been recently updated, so his legacy will continue.

Visiting artist to offer lectures, workshops in July: "Visiting artist Violet Juno will be on campus July 2-27 with a series of 25 events, including lectures, performances and workshops. The series, called 'Campo Truth Charmer: An Interdisciplinary Performance Expedition,' is meant primarily for artists of all types, from musicians to writers to painters to dancers, and for the 'art-curious' in any discipline.

Juno is an arts learning activist for the Alameda County, Calif., Office of Education. She is also a performance artist, having participated in exhibitions in more than 30 cities over the past 17 years, including a premier performance at SIUC's Kleinau Theater of "Swallowed Whole: Stories from Inside the Painting," an exploration of her work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Juno was born in Germany, but raised in Normal, Ill., where, according to her biography, she learned to recognize the "absurd masquerading as the mundane." She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree at Washington University and a master of fine arts at the University of California-San Diego.

Juno's visit here is funded in part by the Student Fine Arts Activity Fee. All of her events are open and free of charge. Each week has a theme. The schedule is given in the press release."

The Southern Illinois Art Gallery at Rend Lake will be displaying the paintings of Carolyn Plochmann's Gift, a selection of paintings and drawings from the 1940s through 2005. The highly distinguished Carbondale artist, Plochmann, gifted the work to the Illinois State Museum in 2006, many of which are being shown for the first time.

Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, SIUC assistant professor of art, is among an elite group of artists selected to display their work at the Portfolio Gallery, a venue that is a haven for African-American artistic expression.

Main St., Barnell's show "Dimensions and Dreamscapes" offers clever and colorful paintings that take her viewers on an "out of body experience" or regress them into the magical state of childhood.

Christa is an established fine artist who holds a BFA from the School of Creative Arts in Fort Wayne. Growing up in the woods of rural Indiana, Christa tuned into her spiritual connection with nature, and turned to painting as a relief from chronic headaches.

Christa has been displaying her whimsical art at juried exhibitions and galleries across the Indiana state and winning various awards. After taking Second Place in a National Contest, her painting, "My Life on a Shelf" was exhibited at the John Hancock Building in Chicago. "Post Angel" took Best Work, First Time Exhibitor, Contemporary, at the 80th Annual Hoosier Salon
in Indianapolis. Recently Christa's story and her art was featured in Angels On Earth magazine, a Guidepost publication. The artist is at the beginning of her career and currently lives here in Carbondale, Illinois with her husband Todd and their two cats.

The recent show of prisoner art at the Carbondale Civic Center by Carbondale Community Arts resulted in one piece being removed, since there were some complaints about the subject matter. This is it. We at Art Lovers understand the need to keep exposed breasts out of public buildings. At this writing, no paintings of exposed breasts can be found on the walls of Art Lovers gallery either, but it might be fun to hang this one on the wall for a week or two, or put it up for auction on the new Ebay store.

As part of International Week at SIU, a group of Tibetan monk sand painters (from India) are creating a mandala for the occasion. Better look fast, because the creation is only temporary and the sand will be returned to the river by the monks in a religious ceremony over the weekend. (That's the Dalai Lama in the photo).

Leather artist and songwriter Daniel Cooper, from Nashville, Tennessee, graced the Art Lovers gallery, last night for a new opening on the First Friday of February. Art patrons were treated not only to Daniel's tactile art, but also the sax and keyboard jazz stylings of 5th generation Carbondalean, Shadi Frick, as well as a song by Daniel called "Cockroaches, Keith Richards, and me." Among the other artists in attendance was Victor Degraff, whose cave paintings in sand bear a striking resemblance to Cooper's oil on leather renditions.

Throughout the month of February at Art Lovers Trading Company in Carbondale, Daniel Cooper, a leather artist, knife maker, and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee will be the featured artist, beginning on the First Friday of the month.

Mr. Cooper attended college in Southern California, in the early 1970's, studying sculptural ceramics, before moving to Hawaii, where he taught ceramics, pottery, stained glass, screen printing, jewelry, silver and gold fabrication, and casting, lapidary, leather, advanced woodworking. His work has received many prestigious awards, including "1998 Best of Show" at the Mountain Artist Rendezvous in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Daniel currently produces one-of-a-kind hand-made sculptural items made from deer and elk antler, hand painted leather wall art, leather bags, cell phone cases, and other custom leather accessories.

Daniel Cooper has also been a performing musician, and songwriter for over 35 years. He moved to the Nashville area in 2002 to write music for the country/rock market, and continue producing his art, which can be viewed at www.danielcooperart.com

Visual Artist Najjar Abdul-Musawwir received his education in the School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL. He uses his Islamic belief and abstract painting to develop his artwork from his African-American experience. Chicago sculptor to create piece for library: "An aluminum and stainless steel mobile that utilizes the unpredictability of the wind will grace Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Morris Library upon completion of the expansion/renovation project.

The wind-driven piece by Chicago sculptor Evan Lewis will hang in the vestibule of the library's north entrance. A rotating exterior piece will turn the interior mobile based on wind direction and velocity.

Funding for the project is from the long-standing Illinois Capital Development Board's Arts-in-Architecture program. The state sets aside one-half of one percent of any construction budget on CDB-built facilities to buy art for buildings by artists who live in the state.

The outside piece is 24 feet in diameter when stretched out, and will weigh about 300 pounds. The inside piece is 36 feet high, and will move in a cylinder that has a diameter of 16 feet, Lewis said. The piece will be about 12 feet off the ground, and weigh about 500 pounds. Rotors and two exterior secondary arms will connect the two pieces."

Daily Egyptian: High school students display art: "Students from Carbondale Community High School displayed their artistic talents Thursday night in the school's main hallway with the hopes of receiving a few hundred dollars.

The Beta Eta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha played host to the exhibit, which awarded $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. The awards were made possible through the sponsorships of both local businesses and greek and non-greek organizations on campus.

Carbondale Community High School art instructors Connie Morgan, Frances Swedlund and Gloria Jones had the daunting task of picking through the multitude of entries and selecting the six finalists for the competition part of Thursday's exhibition. Although all works for the contest were on display, the finalists were signified with yellow ribbons. Separate judges made their top three selections from these pieces.

'It was very hard for us the judge the pieces,' said Morgan, who has taught art at the high school for six years. 'We really had to just take ourselves out of it and try to judge the best work.' University professor Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, one of two judges Thursday night, said he was impressed by the overall exhibition and the students' use of their specific mediums.

The show featured various types of artwork, including sculptures, paintings, photography and sketches. John Torphy, a senior who will study art and design at the University in the fall, took first place for his photo spread, which used three photographs of a young girl to show the burdens placed on youth. 'In one photo, she's standing in thorns, and if she moves any direction, they'll hurt her,' Torphy said. 'The idea is that children are burdened at a young age by things they shouldn't have to deal with.'

Casey Worrell was awarded second and Melissa Evans third. Katey Karayiannis, a senior who will attend SIUC in the fall, was one of the finalists in the competition. She said although she didn't win, she was surprised and pleased just to be in the finals, especially once she saw the quality of the other entries."

Victor DeGraff established the Sands of Time studio in Cobden, Illinois in 1980. There he developed a technique of using all natural colored sands to make permanent sand paintings. He was drawn to the southern Illinois area due to the abundance of natural colored sandstone in the area. Not restricted to that area, he has gathered sands from all parts of the United States, as well as traded sand colors with members of the International Sand Collectors Society’s some 1500 members. Some of the more vibrant colors come from minerals like azurite, sodalite, etc. collected by a fellow sand painter in South Africa.

Fran Jaffe was born in Oak Park and currently resides in Carbondale, Illinois. A self-taught artist, she began painting in 1995 after meeting an artist in Arizona who demonstrated the Australian Aboriginal dot art technique to her. Fran's inspiration has come from her many travels throughout America, India and the Middle East. She has a deep admiration of Tibetan thangkas and mandalas, Native American painting and beadwork, Australian Aboriginal art and the artisans who create such work.

Her mission is to bring together spiritual symbols and images of all cultures to show the similarities and unity of the human spirit that has existed since the begining of time.

Fran paints with mixed media on gourds, slate and granite tiles, river rocks and wood as a symbol of unity with our ancestors. She uses individual dots of acrylic paint to create the illusion of beading, which comes together in colorful and spiritual images. She most recently has begun to employ dye methods and faux batik in her artwork.

Ms. Jaffe is proud to be a part of the Illinois Artisans Program. Her work is currently on exhibit at the following galleries:

Perhaps the most profitable contest of its kind, its purse may go to a single winner or be split among several artists. Art school faculty annually select the winners, with the announcement set for 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Surplus Gallery at the Glove Factory, a collection of studios and galleries kept by the University (408 S. Washington St.), at the corner of Washington and College streets.

Jan Von Bokel’s paintings have been displayed in both solo and group exhibits through out the Midwest. Tarble Art Center on the campus of Eastern Illinois, University, The Swope Art Museum and Lakeland College Library Gallery to name a few.
